Gr 5 and up – For Jarrett, life is not that simple. His single mom insists in fostering other children, school is not doing well, and it is embarrassingly hard to talk to the girl he likes. To make matters worse, Jarrett has to deal with the latest addition to the family, a slightly older foster kid, who is making his life miserable, and be weary of the police that is harassing kids in the neighborhood. The first person narrative is sincere and filled with social issues. However, the use of heavy slang language, depiction of children’s abuse and racist language, while can certainly attract mature teen readers, might overwhelm younger ones.
