Caterpillar made of rocks

Materials:

Rocks (smooth) of similar sizes

Acrylic paint

Brushes

Procedure:

Wash rocks and let them dry completey before painting.

Use your favorites colors and paint the rocks all around. A second coat might be necesary. Let the paint dry and decorate with a combination of colors and patterns.

For a family activity. Ages 3 and up.

Procedure:

Ask children to mold the playdough into a monster and decorate.

Cubism With Triangles

Materials:

Six cardboard triangles of different shapes per child

Tempera paint

Heavy weight paper

Brush

Procedure:

Ask children to count their ears, eyes, mouth, and nose. Show them the six triangles and direct them to make a face. Recommend caregivers avoid telling children where to put their face parts.

UFO

Materials:

Process:

Children will have fun with this activity. Ask them to think of a UFO and decorate. Children can go further and create an outer space creature as well.

Landscape Using Bird Seeds

Materials:

Bird seeds

Plastic grass

Color pencils

Heavy weight paper

Glue

 

Process:

Talk to children about nature or what they see when they go for a walk or to the park. Show children the materials and ask them to create a nature scene. 

For ages 5 and up

Building with Cardboard

Materials:

 

Cardbaord paper

Corks

Toilet rolls

Popsicle sticks

Glue

 

Process:

 

Ask children to think of houses and buildings. Then ask them to look at the materials they have a build a structure. Avoid samples. Children's creativity is all they need.

For ages 5 and up

Jungle Animals

Materials:

 

Tempera

Heavy weight mixed paper

 

Process:

Ask children to use their imagination to create a jungle animal.

 

Bridges

Materials:

 

Popsicle sticks

Cardboard

toilet roll 

 

Process:

 

Ask children to imagine a bridge. If they have never seen one, have a book ready with a picture so children can visualize the idea. Stimulate their learning process by asking what is the purpose of a bridge?

Finger Painting

Materials:

Tempera (many colours)

Heavy wheight paper

 

Process:

Ask children to use their index finger, choose colors and create. They can also mix primary colors to determine what happens when they mix these colors. If  you can, display their work.

Glue and paper art

Materials:

 

Black construction paper

Construction paper (different colors)

Glue

 

Process:

 

Ask children to cut little squares of construction paper and glue it to the black paper forming any shape. Then using their fingers, children will put glue around simulating snow. Good activity to talk about punctilism art. Avoid samples. Children's imagination is all they need.

For ages 3 and up

Butterfly

Materials:

Buttefly template

Sequins

Tissue paper

Pipe cleaner

 

Ask children to cut a template of a butterfly. Children will decorate using tissue paper, sequins and jewels. Avoid showing a sample. The idea is that children use their creativity to decorate the butterfly.

For ages 5 and up

Slides

Materials: 

 

Popsicle sticks

Cardboard paper in different sizes

Cork

Glue

 

Process

 

Ask children about the slides at the park. Motivate them to talk about the different uses of a slide. If  you can, display their work. Avoid showing samples. Let them use their imagination.

For ages 5 and up

Newspaper/Magazine Shapes

Materials:

 

Newspaper or magazine paper

Scissors

Watercolor/tempera

Brushes

Heavy weight paper

Glue

 

Process:

 

Ask children to cut different shapes using newspaper or magazine paper. Children will glue the shapes on the heavy weight paper and color with tempera or watercolor. Ask children to be careful working with watercolor, too much water will damage the paper.

Stars with Color Sand

Materials:

 

Color sand

Black construction paper. (Heavy weight paper prefered)

Glue

 

Process:

 

Ask children to think of the stars they see at night. They will use the glue and sprinke different sand colors to bring up the light into the black paper. Older kids might do a shooting star. Avoid using a sample. Children's imagination is all they need.

For ages 3 and up

Free art with fabric

Materials:

 

Fabric cut in different shapes

Process: Ask children to look at the materials they have and create a collage. Avoid samples. Children's imagination is all they need.

Process:

 

Ask childrent to think of the leafs of the trees and decorate freely.

Abstract Art with Color Sand

Materials:

 

Craft sand (different colors)

Color heavy weight paper

Glue

 

Process:

 

Ask children to spread glue lightly and sprinkle sand on it. Ask children to move their fingers freely and observe their end product. 

For ages 3 and up

Wood Shapes Art

Materials: 

 

Wood shapes

Tempera

Heavy weight paper

Ribbon

Glue

 

Process:

 

Ask children to glue to the wood shapes into the paper and color them using tempera. When their art is dry, children will place ribbons into holes and finish with a hanging bow. Invite them to decorate their rooms with their art. Avoid samples. Children's creativity is all they need.
